OUR AIM
Working Towards a Vegan Future
Our project is advocating for positive changes to vegan labeling throughout Japan. With the petition we created and circulated, we aim to show the government and businesses that there is a need for improvement and that the vegan community in Japan, as well as inbound tourists, are dissatisfied with the current situation. The petition was accompanied by a questionnaire in which 86% of respondents stated that they had trouble due to unclear labeling in Japan.
OUR CHALLENGES
The JVL project is hoping to find solutions to the following problems:
The lack of easily identifiable vegan options in restaurants and cafes even in major cities such as Tokyo or Yokohama.
The lack of knowledge or misunderstanding about what vegan is and how it differs from vegetarian.
Vague product ingredient labeling or products with animal ingredients that can be hidden under general names.
Businesses in Japan are not aware of the need for products and labeling because consumers are in the closet.
OUR REQUESTS
We are asking manufacturers to improve ingredient labeling and add labels as appropriate so that products can be more easily identifiable as vegan by consumers.
In addition, we are asking the government to encourage restaurants to add vegetarian and vegan options to their menus. It would also be extremely helpful not only for residents but also for inbound tourists to see items on restaurant menus that are vegan or can be adapted to be vegetarian or vegan.
